Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the insider tips among the Christmas markets. It is said to be the most beautiful in Italy. Over 200 stalls in the form of typical small chalets wind their way through the entire village, creating an atmospheric ambience in this Christmas village. Typical regional products (honey, cheese, charcuterie, bread) and various handicrafts are on offer. While mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and sausages delight the palate, street artists, concerts and musical parades are a treat for the ears and eyes. Let yourself be enchanted.

Travel by coach through the Gotthard tunnel to Locarno and enjoy a coffee and croissant on the outward journey. In Locarno you change to the Centovalli railway. During the hour-long journey through the Centovalli to Val Vigezzo, the train crosses countless bridges and viaducts and there is plenty to marvel at. The 4-hour stop offers the opportunity to stroll around the market and immerse yourself in this atmospheric Christmas magic. Many delicacies are on offer at stalls and in restaurants and there are concerts and street artists performing in various squares. Santa Maria Maggiore is the ‘chimney sweep village’ - a visit to the museum is definitely worthwhile. At 4.10 p.m. return journey by train to Locarno and from there we travel by car back to the places of boarding.
