Einsiedeln in a state of emergency!
Experience the Einsiedeln World Theatre, which only takes place every 7 years. On stage and behind the scenes, over 500 participants, some of them women, men and children from the village, will be involved in a magnificent new production of a sacred play by Pedro Calderon de la Barca.

17th season
Great stories in a place with a great history: "The Einsiedeln World Theatre" 2024. Since 1924, amateur actors, singers and musicians have been performing ‘The Great World Theatre’ by Pedro Calderón de la Barca on the imposing square in front of the baroque monastery church in Einsiedeln. The Spanish baroque poet's sacred play has changed considerably over the course of its 16 seasons to date, but especially since the turn of the millennium. For the new production of the play in 2024, a contemporary author has been commissioned for the fourth time to develop a contemporary re-creation of the material. Lukas Bärfuss, who was awarded the prestigious Georg Büchner Prize in 2019, is doing this together with director Livio Andreina.

Einsiedeln in a state of emergency! In the 17th season, over 500 participants will once again be taking part on stage or behind the scenes. In the monastery village, we speak of the playfolk, which includes women, men and children from all over the village. For many Einsiedler:innen, being part of the Spielvolk is a life's work that runs through the various playing periods. Those who sang in a choir decades ago now play a leading role. And those who have always provided props or sewn clothes behind the scenes want to contribute to the success of the play this time too.
