After arriving in Newcastle and having breakfast, we continue our journey northwards. We drive through the picturesque landscapes of the Scottish Borders to Edinburgh. A city tour brings us closer to the Scottish capital. We explore a section of the famous Royal Mile, which stretches along the picturesque Old Town, and also get to know the New Town with its magnificent Gregorian buildings during the tour. The highlight of the tour is Edinburgh Castle, which sits enthroned on the volcanic rock above the city. This is where the Scottish crown jewels and the coronation stone are kept. Visit the ancient walls individually or enjoy the unique panorama over the city. Then check into the good ***S hotel, dinner at the hotel. In the evening, we climb the esplanade in front of Edinburgh Castle again to attend the world-famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
Today we will be able to enjoy the two most popular and obvious symbols of Scotland, its castles and its national drink, whisky. We cross the Firth of Forth via the imposing suspension bridge and soon reach the pretty village of Pitlochry. The Blair Athol Distillery is located here. A guided tour of this traditional distillery reveals the secrets of the liquid gold. Shortly afterwards, we reach the fairytale Blair Castle and have the opportunity to visit it. We will spend the night in a good **** hotel in Aviemore. Dinner will also be served in the hotel.
Strengthened by breakfast, we set off on our exploration tour of the north-west Highlands. Dreamlike, idyllic and lonely landscapes await us. We drive along the Beauly Firth to the Black Isle. We continue along the route along Loch Glascarnoch to Poolewe. Here we visit Inverewe Garden, one of the most northerly botanical gardens in the world. Due to its favoured location on the north-west coast of Scotland, directly on the warm Gulf Stream, it impresses with a variety of plants that is completely atypical for this latitude. Past Gairloch along Loch Maree and via Kinlochewe we return to Aviemore. Dinner at the hotel.
Today promises to be a special ‘Scotland day’. On the way to Fort William, we reach Eilean Donan Castle, which is definitely worth a stopover. At Fort William we make a detour to the Glenfinnan Viaduct. This impressive structure was made world-famous by the Harry Potter films. With a bit of luck, we will experience the Jacobite Steam Train steaming over the viaduct, giving us the feeling that we are on our way to Hogwarts. Through the Glencoe Valley, the ‘Valley of Tears’, we reach Loch Lomond, one of Scotland's most beautiful lakes. In the evening we check into our rooms in Glasgow for two nights.
Our journey takes us to Stirling today. Here we visit the Stirling Highland Games. They are an integral part of Scottish culture. What was originally intended to find the best warriors of the clan for various tasks is now a sporting event open to all. Amateurs and semi-professionals come together to wrestle, run, throw, dance and compete. Those who wish can also visit Stirling Castle, which symbolises Scottish independence and is one of the most impressive castles in Scotland.
We start the day with an exciting city tour of Glasgow. We experience the attractive city, its cultural and artistic wealth and are enchanted by the former cultural capital.
